EC Plug Fan Upgrade


The Issue

We were approached by the client to attend site and survey two AHU’s, which were landside. The two existing AHU’s were around 30 years old and coming to the end of their practical working life.


The Solution

We proposed to strip out the existing belt driven fans and replace with brand new best in class EC plug fans. Alongside these works we carried out additional repairs to the fabric of the AHU’s such as replacing worn out duct transition pieces, which were leaking air and causing a waste of energy.

The works were carefully planned with the airport, with other trades carrying out works in the same area to minimise disruption to the daily running of one of the world’s busiest airports. All our repair and upgrade works were completed within four days and handed back over fully working. To achieve such a quick turnaround, we assembled the new fans and bulkhead sections off site and ran a full test so we knew there would be no surprises or issues once installed on site. These were then dismantled and sent to site to be fitted into the AHU’s.


Outcomes

We have just completed the post fitting data logging and the results have shown a 74.71% reduction in energy consumption on the larger of the two AHU’s and 43% on the smaller unit. The overall energy saving is 59% across both AHU’s.
